The Greek Evangelical Church (GEC) is a very small Church in a context where the Orthodox Church is a state Church. Because of the small number of people involved, until recently our church had no other projects than evangelism beyond the church.

However, Rev M. Meletiadis has developed an environmental program in Volos, in cooperation with the GEC-Youth Movement, collecting litter from the Volos city and beaches. During the 2004 Olympics it was expanded Athens. Psalm 24.1, "The earth is the Lord's and all its fullness" gives the relational framework between humans and the rest of Creation which inspires the project. The project was presented in ECEN’s Assembly-Volos-2003; its poster in the exhibition-Basil 2005, where a brochure was distributed.

In 2005 the GEC in Alexandroupolis initiated its own program, in cooperation with the Municipality, and reported in the local newspaper. The aim is to stimulate the population to take care of the environment. The initiative belongs to the wider environmental program of the GEC and the even wider framework of the European Environmental Christian Network.

A committee on "Sanctity of Life-Ecology" was organized under the leadership of Mr Koutsopoulos, Professor of the Athens-Polytechnic School, and Ioanna Sahinidou. The aim of the committee is to help the GEC to speak out on environmental issues through the local churches, its magazine and its Synods, both within the GEC and beyond. The remit of the committee includes Ecumenism, Ecology, and Family.

Proposals before the committee include:

  • the GEC promotes the idea of a special Creation Time in the church calendar
  • during this time the "Environmental Program of the GEC" develops in more cities.
  • Available texts, documents from ECEN-dossiers are translated into Greek.
  • The Memorandum: ECEN-Consultation on Creation Theology is translated into Greek.
