EYCE Summer School

"Water, Air & Earth - Celebrating Nature, Improving the Future"

15-22 August 2004 - Durham, UK

The Ecumenical Youth Council in Europe (EYCE) held a summer school on the theme  "Water, Air & Earth - Celebrating Nature, Improving the Future" in Durham, UK, 15-22 August 2004. The event was prepared in co-operation with ECEN.

How are we using/misusing nature? How can we live together? What are the things I can do to improve my relationship to the rest of the nature? How do everyday actions impact my future? These are some of the questions EYCE dealt with during the summer school.

EYCE Press Release 24.08.2004

The Ecumenical Youth Council in Europe can gladly report that the EYCE Summer School 2004 was successfully implemented from 15th to 22nd of August 2004 in Durham, England, UK. It was an event held in close co-operation with the European Christian Environmental Network (ECEN – www.ecen.org) and was welcomed by Churches Together in England (CTE). 37 participants from 15 European countries and the U.S.A. came together. “Be Eco – It’s Fun!” was the motto that was created by the participants in the beginning of the week and later even turned into an easy to remember jingle.

The second EYCE Summer School focused on the theme “Water, Air and Earth – Celebrating Nature, Improving the Future”.

Indeed, the participants looked into the environmental problems related to water, air and earth. And as one of the participants said: “Yes, we celebrated the Nature”. Ideas were gathered and projects were proposed that will help to improve the future and sustain our environment. The summer school was intended to not only bring about more knowledge on how to better care for Creation as our environment, but it was meant to be full of creative elements.

Participants therefore received input from various guest speakers but they were also experts themselves. It was learning by heads, hands and hearts! Participants investigated closely the issue of Climate Change, learnt how to re-use and recycle various resources themselves, learnt about the needs of Eco-systems and gained insight on how the Bible looks at Creation.

37 young people will act as multipliers as they committed themselves to improve our future and this is only the beginning… Momentum was gained and encouragement was received as all participants got ideas how they can make a difference:
“We have not inherited the earth from our parents, we are borrowing it from our children!”

More detailed information will be made available in the Final Report. You can now view the first pictures in the gallery on the EYCE website.
