The European nature protection year 1995 was cause for the
establishment of the FRANZ OF ASSISI ACADEMY on 23
May 1995. The FRANZ OF ASSISI ACADEMY is
a
oekumenisch oriented, European-wide active
environmental academy for the protection of the earth on Christian
foundations. The academy understands itself as Christian protection
of interests of future generations and their bases of life.
In the last years it became ever clearer that the Christians
and churches must carry out
a course change concerning the ecological question, if these the
practical responsibility for the new practice of the futurable
development to become really fair to want. Over 400 million the
Christians in Europe carry therefore a large responsibility for the
necessary direction change for the conversion of the necessary global
futurable development. For this the academy contributes by
Sensibilisierungs-und clearing-up work in the European churches and in
Europe.
Targets and functions on European level
A central function of the academy on European level is the
scientific consultation of churches and church institutions regarding
the conversion of the example of the futurable development to church
environmental practice. The academy carries for this with through:
Project consultation, the promotion of the European oekumenischen
consent identification and forming of an opinion, the encouragement of
the commitment of the European Christians and by initiatives for the
setting up of new capacities and structures for the church
environmental work in Europe.
A further sphere of activity is the scientific Untersuetzung
of churches and non-profit bodies during the conversion of
international conventions, laws and assertions e.g.
Agenda 21 /sustainable development ,
the the Climate Change Framework Convention ,
the the Convention on Biodiversity, the 5th. Community program for environmental policy
of the European union.

European-American consultation for the preparation of the VN general assembly to the agenda 21 in New York in co-operation with " The Consortium on religion and Ecology - international (Washington) ".

In view of the ecological crisis to the inter-religious and ecumenical dialogues and co-operation with other Christian institutions and religions in the Rio discrete event type process come a special meaning. In academic, oekumenischer and inter+religious regard the FRANZ OF ASSISI ACADEMY is open therefore to each union and each institution and attaches cooperative and partnership contacts to all, which provide themselves around the future of our earth and use themselves for retaining of God creation.
