The European nature protection year 1995 was cause for the establishment of the FRANZ OF ASSISI ACADEMY on 23 May 1995. The FRANZ OF ASSISI ACADEMY is a oekumenisch oriented, European-wide active environmental academy for the protection of the earth on Christian foundations. The academy understands itself as Christian protection of interests of future generations and their bases of life.

In the last years it became ever clearer that the Christians and churches must carry out a course change concerning the ecological question, if these the practical responsibility for the new practice of the futurable development to become really fair to want. Over 400 million the Christians in Europe carry therefore a large responsibility for the necessary direction change for the conversion of the necessary global futurable development. For this the academy contributes by Sensibilisierungs-und clearing-up work in the European churches and in Europe.

Targets and functions on European level

A central function of the academy on European level is the scientific consultation of churches and church institutions regarding the conversion of the example of the futurable development to church environmental practice. The academy carries for this with through: Project consultation, the promotion of the European oekumenischen consent identification and forming of an opinion, the encouragement of the commitment of the European Christians and by initiatives for the setting up of new capacities and structures for the church environmental work in Europe.

A further sphere of activity is the scientific Untersuetzung of churches and non-profit bodies during the conversion of international conventions, laws and assertions e.g. Agenda 21 /sustainable development , the the Climate Change Framework Convention , the the Convention on Biodiversity, the 5th. Community program for environmental policy of the European union.

European internal messages, projects and work emphasis (1995-1997)

• Participation in the European consultation (Crete 1995) of the advice of the European bishop conferences and the conference of European churches over "environment and development".



• In co-operation with 10 other agencies responsible for the project (municipalities, federations, church) the academy took part in the European nature protection year 1995 than official contribution of the Federal Republic of Germany with the Altmuehltal project. Target of the Altmuehltal project was the modelful introduction of the international scheme of the agenda 21 (restaurants agenda 21). The Altmuehltal project was divided into 25 subprojects and by the German federal donation environment was promoted.



• The Altmuehltal project was selected 1995 by the German national committee as contribution of the Federal Republic of Germany for the European nature protection year 1995 and was under the patronage of the Federal President.



• Execution of the European consultation over " Christianity and future-capable Europe " 1996 in Eichstaett under the participation of over 100 Repraesentaten of churches and church organizations, national institutions, universities and environment organizations from 23 countries. This conference served the preparation of the " second European Oekumeni meeting " (Graz, 23,-29,06,97).



• Partner organization at the organization of the dialog forum " Zukunftsfaeiges Europe " of the 2. European Oekumeni meeting in Graz on behalf of the European bishop conference (St. Gallen) and the conference of European churches (Geneva).




• European-American consultation for the preparation of the VN general assembly to the agenda 21 in New York in co-operation with " The Consortium on religion and Ecology - international (Washington) ".

European structure and membership

• So far 25 tidy academy members from 12 European states belong to the scientific academy. Long-term target are from all European countries leading representative into the academy to be appointed. Additionally there are members, Foerdermitglieder and friends the academy. The academy apart from numerous meetings and conferences, annually holds a European academy session with general assembly usually with a symposium. The academy maintains numerous make contacts to European and international institutions.



• The academy understands itself because of their structure, their main points of work and their members as independent, European Nichtregierungsorganisation. Working languages of the academy are English and German, as well as Franzoesich or if necessary another European language.



• At flow of the establishment phase (vorraussichtlich at the end of of 1998) the academy in the future increases own publications, advanced training measures, information and advisory services to offer to be able.

In view of the ecological crisis to the inter-religious and ecumenical dialogues and co-operation with other Christian institutions and religions in the Rio discrete event type process come a special meaning. In academic, oekumenischer and inter+religious regard the FRANZ OF ASSISI ACADEMY is open therefore to each union and each institution and attaches cooperative and partnership contacts to all, which provide themselves around the future of our earth and use themselves for retaining of God creation.
