The G8 Summit, Gleneagles, Scotland, June 2005

LETTERS FROM THE CHURCHES

At the Fifth Assembly in Basel, ECEN issued a message on Climate Change to the G8 Summit:

"... We urge you as G8 leaders whose nations account for almost half the world´s GHG emissions to seize this opportunity to agree on:

  • decisive action now for rapid GHG emission reduction and
  • an outline architecture for committed global action post-2012, including sharp reduction of GHG emissions in the G8 countries and financial commitments for adaptation measures in the South ..."

The message from ECEN forms part of the letter to the G8 from the Conference of European Churches. Download the letter in Word format.

The Evangelical Alliance Scotland, along with the Society Religion and Technology Project and Tearfund Scotland, wrote to the G8 leaders calling for action on Climate Change. Download their letter here (Word 120KB).

The World Council of Churches (WCC) has written a letter to Prime Minister Blair of the UK, who will be chairing the G8 summit, urging the G8 to work for the equitable sharing of global resources. On the WCC website you can read their press release and the full letter to Tony Blair.

CLIMATE BELLS

Churches around the UK planned to ring their bells on Thursday 7 July at 1345, to wake the G8 up to the fact that their countries account for 13 per cent of the world's population, but produce 45 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions. This was part of Friends of the Earth's climate alarm. In Scotland, the Church of Scotland's General Assembly asked all churches to take part, and a special liturgy was produced which you can download here:
Formatted as an A5 booklet (PDF, 118kb)
Text format which you can adapt (Word 33kb).
Following the terrorist attacks that morning in London, some churches chose not to sound an alarm but to observe a minute's silence instead.

THE CHURCHES AND CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate Change is not only the subject of one of the ECEN working groups: it is the most important context behind all recent Assembly discussions on issues of sustainability, lifestyle, and the future of creation. More...

The World Council of Churches produces regular updates on issues surrounding climate change. More...

Tearfund has produced a useful set of resources on the link between poverty and climate change which can be found on their website here. In particular their report Up in Smoke (PDF, 787kb) analyses threats from, and responses to, the impact of global warming on human development.

REDUCE YOUR OWN GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

The Methodist Church in the UK has produced an Energy Study Pack o help people share in an informed debate and in the development of public policy, and to consider what actions can be taken individually and in communities to achieve a sustainable lifestyle. It can be bought on-line here
