1. Ecology in the church
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Württemberg has established a set of ecological guidelines. The General Synod, church management and the environmental council support the following commitments:
Our responsibility for the environment is a logical consequence of our confession of faith to the one God in three persons. Accordingly, this responsibility is binding for the entire Church.
- Our decisions are taken in solidarity with other world regions.
- We respect the rights of future generations.
- We respect the life of plants and animals and their biospheres
- We operate on the assumption that environmental protection and economic viability are compatible
- In all what we do, we choose the means which result in the least environmental pollution
- We promote ecological consultancy.
- In each of our work areas, we actualise and translate these guidelines into action.
Practical Work
Several projects have been set up, for example:
- - Ecological audit in our Church Service Centre.
- - Nature conservation in church properties
- - Energy management with new way of organising and financing for example contracting
- - Advice to use public transport for official journeys
- - Creation Day: our general synod has decided to recommend the celebration of a day for creation
2. Church, Society and Sustainable Development
We are engaged in several academic working circles and committees of our government. For example the committee für Technikfolgenabschätzung" (forecasting technological influence for the society in the future), (environmental schedule). Every year there is also a meeting with the minister for environment and transport. We organise activities for car free Sunday in co-operation with different environmental and social association.
