EKD Synod demands more climate protection

Decision of the 12th Synod of the Evangelical Church in Germany at its 7th session to

"More climate protection for a resilient society"

November 9, 2020

The Synod of the EKD asks the [EKD] Council to work with the Federal Government to ensure that

• an ambitious EU climate protection program with a 60% reduction in CO2 emissions in 2030 (based on 1990) will be adopted within the German EU Council Presidency.

• in Germany, ambitious climate targets with a CO2 reduction of 65% in 2030 (based on 1990) and climate neutrality by 2050 at the latest will be put into effect promptly in Germany.

This means a significant acceleration of the energy, transport and heating transition in Germany.

Following on from the EKD's climate report, the Synod calls on all regional churches and the EKD and its institutions to reduce emissions by 60% (based on 2005) in 2030 and to achieve climate neutrality in the entire Evangelical Church area by 2050 at the latest.
