The climate change working group addresses one of the most crucial environmental issues facing humanity. Many parts of the world are facing serious disruptions caused by climate change. Its challenges strike deep into our society and lifestyles. Climate experts say we need a steep and swift global reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Yet governments disagree about reductions of barely a tenth of what is needed. Find out in these pages what ECEN, in collaboration with other church organisations, is doing to promote action and raise awareness of these crucial issues.

Churches reaffirm the need for a fair, ambitious and binding treaty to effectively address climate change. A significant number of representatives of European churches and church related organisations incl. members of ECEN were present in recent climate talks in Durban. They were part of an ecumenical team under the leadership of the World Council of Churches which aimed in a coordinated way to address the meeting.

DanChurchAid documentary wins first prize at COP 17

One of the ACT partners, DanChurchAid, has won the first prize at the Development and Climate Days Film Competition 2011 at COP17 in Durban. Their film is: 'Ripples - Climate Change and Disaster Management in Bangladesh'.

The film was shortlisted among 70 climate documentaries, and yesterday an unanimous panel of judges announced "Ripples" as the winner.

If all the world leaders would watch this film, maybe they would understand how serious the climate change is to people around the world and THEY WOULD ACT NOW!!!

WCC calls Durban a “last opportunity” to act responsibly for climate justice

Considering climate change a “root of ethical crisis”, the World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary, Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, calls the United Nations Conference on Climate Change COP 17 a “last opportunity for the international community to be responsible in addressing climate change” and urges positive outcomes from the event.

EU willing to re-sign Kyoto Protocol if others act

According to EU Climate Action Commissioner Connie Hedegaard the EU is willing to sign up to a second commitment period under the Kyoto Protocol, but only if commitments are forthcoming from other major emitters. See article in NZHerald.
